For this exhibition, I created a video installation by analyzing Paul Cézanne’s Sugar bowl, Pears and Tablecloth, which is currently exhibited at the Cézanne: Pioneer of Modern Art show, into data composed of one-pixel squares. It is inspired by Cézanne’s artistic approach: combining “multiple viewpoints” and the use of “constructive brush strokes” for each object in a painting. One single image depicted by Cézanne has “multiple viewpoints” and “constructive brush strokes”. I take it as representation of variation within an individual, visualized using about 28,000 pixels with different movement script. The “multiple viewpoints” depicted in Cézanne’s paintings may be understood as data collected by the painter, and since each of them rely on his original viewpoint, the paintings inherently retain an extreme variation. Taking this “variation” as its motif, focuses on the smallest compositional element of the digitized picture that is the pixel in current information distribution, and modifies, constructs, and varies those pixels as an homage to Cézanne.

今回はセザンヌ展の出品作である《砂糖壺、梨とテーブルクロス》の画像データを「１ピクセル」の正方形のデータに分解し、それを元に映像インスタレーションを制作しました。これはセザンヌが、複数の視点から見たイメージを再構成して絵画を表現していることや、同じ絵画でもモチーフによって全く異なる筆触で描いていることに着想を得たものです。セザンヌが絵画で表現した複数の視点、異なる筆触を、一人の人間が持つ多様なありようの表れと捉え、「１ピクセル」に分解した約28,000個のそれぞれのデータ全てに異なる動きをあたえ、映像化しています。セザンヌの絵画に描かれた「複数の視点」とはセザンヌ自身が採取した情報と言え、またそれは一つ一つがセザンヌ独自の視点であるため、一枚の絵画は非常に多様な存在とも言えます。この作品では「多様性」をキーワードに現在の情報伝達において画像がデジタル処理された際、その画像を構成する最小サイズの「ピクセル」に焦点を当て、そのピクセルを変換、構築、多様化することで、セザンヌのオマージュとした作品を制作しました。
